The art of sabering

Sabrage

This tradition dates back to Napoleon and, more specifically, to the Hussards military corps, who celebrated their victories by popping bottles of champagne. Each victory won by the Emperor’s army was celebrated with festivities during which it was considered good taste toopen a bottle quickly, allowingthe cork to fly out. The sabre lighter was the instrument of this celebration.

During one of these festivities, Napoleon himself is reported to have said:

In victory you deserve champagne, in defeat you need it

The art of sabering

Highly international

From these glorious moments in French history comes the art of sabrage, which marries the noble wine of Champagne with the elegance of the saber. Opening a bottle of Champagne means promise of a party; to sabotage it is to turn it into a certainty
